The airline pilot application process in India
Applying to an airline is not one event. It is a funnel of stages, each of which screens people out. Knowing the whole sequence lets you prepare for the next step instead of being surprised by it, and lets you spot immediately when someone outside that sequence asks you for money.
Apply only through the airline's own careers site: Air India, IndiGo, Akasa and Air India Express all publish openings directly. The usual sequence is document screening, an aptitude test, group exercises and psychometrics, interviews, sometimes a simulator assessment, then medical and final checks. Legitimate airlines do not charge you to apply.
The typical sequence
- 1
Spot the opening and check the minimums. Airlines recruit in cycles and publish minimum requirements: licence, hours, sometimes a type rating, age and medical status. Read the actual posting, because minimums differ by airline and by intake.
- 2
Application and document screening. Your licence, hours, exam record, medical and background are checked. Meticulous, internally consistent paperwork matters more here than most candidates expect.
- 3
Aptitude assessment. Many carriers run a COMPASS or CASS-style screening as an early filter.
- 4
Group exercises and psychometrics. Group discussions or tasks, plus personality questionnaires. Covered in the next lesson.
- 5
Interviews. Technical and HR interviews, the stage that decides most outcomes. It gets its own lesson.
- 6
Simulator assessment. Some airlines assess your handling and crew skills in a simulator.
- 7
Medical and final checks, then an offer, often followed by type rating and line training.
Where to actually apply
Every major Indian carrier publishes pilot openings on its own site. Bookmark these and check them directly rather than relying on forwarded PDFs.

How to be ready
- Keep a "pilot CV" and document pack current: licence, ratings, hour summary by category, medical, ID. Then you can apply the day a window opens rather than scrambling. The documents checklist keeps the set together.
- Meet the minimums honestly. Do not apply below them hoping for an exception, and do apply the moment you clear them.
- Reconcile your logbook before you submit. Screening is where hour totals that do not add up get found.
- Prepare for the stage you are not yet at. The candidates who get through are ready for the interview before they have cleared the aptitude test.
The aptitude test is the filter most applications die at. If your weak spot is the psychomotor or multitasking modules, practice software is the efficient fix.
SkyTest sells practice software that mirrors the tracking, multitasking and memory task styles used in pilot screenings. It is not the real interface, but the licence is perpetual and the repetitions are unlimited, which is what a motor skill actually needs.

Recruitment scams: what the airlines themselves say
Akasa Air states plainly on its careers page that it follows merit-based, transparent recruitment, does not charge fees or deposits from job seekers, and does not partner with agents. DGCA has separately issued a public notice on fraudulent agents. Anyone offering a guaranteed airline job, a "processing fee", a reserved seat in an intake, or a shortcut past the aptitude test is running a scam. That is the agent problem wearing a recruiter's badge.
If in doubt: the offer letter comes from the airline, on the airline's domain, after a process you went through on the airline's own careers portal. Nothing else counts.
Frequently asked questions
How do I apply for a pilot job at IndiGo or Air India?+
Through their own careers portals: IndiGo flight operations and Air India pilot careers. Both publish openings and eligibility directly. Do not apply through an intermediary.
What are the minimum requirements to apply to an Indian airline?+
They vary by airline and by intake, and typically cover licence type, total and category hours, a valid Class 1 medical, age, and sometimes a type rating. Always read the specific posting rather than a general figure quoted online.
Do airlines charge a fee to apply for a pilot job?+
No. Akasa Air states explicitly that it does not charge fees or deposits from job seekers and does not partner with agents. Treat any request for a "processing fee" or "seat booking" as a scam, and note DGCA's public notice on fraudulent agents.
Do I need a type rating before applying?+
Sometimes. Some intakes require you to be type-rated, others train and bond you after selection, and cadet programmes bundle the rating. Check the posting, and read the type-rating decision before you self-fund one.
Key takeaways
- Airline hiring is a funnel: documents, aptitude, group and psychometrics, interviews, sometimes a simulator, then medical and offer.
- Apply only through the airline's own careers site.
- Keep a current pilot CV and a reconciled logbook so you can apply the day a window opens.
- No legitimate airline charges you to apply. Akasa says so on its own careers page, and DGCA has published a notice on fraudulent agents.
Before you move on
Two of those stages, group exercises and the interview, reward preparation most. Next: group discussions and psychometrics.
